  Biography:
Painter and draughtsman, Mortier studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. In his early career, he was influenced by the Flemish expressionists. He spent a short period as part of the 'Jeune Peinture Belge' and then, as a self-taught painter, quickly developed his own artistic identity. His work is characterized by large, energetic and powerful brushstrokes, frequently in brown tones, the result of which is often a set of impressions.
